About the Engineering Technology Department:
All of the programs within the Engineering Technology Department emphasize practical, "hands-on" laboratory experiences in addition to strong theoretical course work. Laboratory exercises and projects are important components of most classes. The Engineering Technology Department's extensive laboratory facilities are housed in the Ross Engineering Technology Building. These laboratories include:
· Materials Testing Characterization and Analysis
· Plastics Processing and Tooling
· Composite Materials
· Technology Education
· Machining, Quality Assurance
· CNC Machining
· Vehicle Research
· CAD
· Robotics and Automation
· CIM
· Microprocessor Design
· Analog Circuits
· Instrumentation and Controls
· Digital Design
· Foundry, Forming, and Joining
· Industrial Design.
Bachelor of Science Degrees are granted in Electronics Engineering Technology, Manufacturing Engineering Technology, Plastics Engineering Technology, Industrial Design, Technology Education, and Industrial Technology with specialization in Industrial Graphics, Vehicle Design, or Individual Specialization by advisement. Graduates of the programs in the Engineering Technology Department have consistently been placed in professional, technical positions appropriate to their field of study.
Information for Prospective Students:
Students interested in enrolling in a program in the Engineering Technology Department must first be admitted to Western Washington University. Admission to Western is selective as the number of qualified applicants exceeds the number of enrollment spaces. Prospective students should follow the deadlines set by the Office of Admissions and submit the required application materials to them. http://www.ac.wwu.edu/~admit Students interested in pursuing an Industrial Design major must submit their entrance portfolios (only) to the Department of Engineering Technology in the Ross Engineering Building in Room 204. For more information on entrance portfolios, see http://www.acadweb.wwu.edu/etec/id
After students are accepted at Western, they do not need to "apply" to or be "accepted" in the Department of Engineering Technology to pursue an Electronics Engineering Technology, Manufacturing Engineering Technology, Plastics Engineering Technology, Industrial Technology, or a Technology Education degree. Students should come to the Academic Office for the Department of Engineering Technology (ET 204) to obtain a Declaration of Major card. At that time, students will be assigned a faculty advisor from their chosen program. Students considering a major within the Engineering Technology Department should seek early advisement from the Engineering Technology Department to assure your course of study is consistent with the pre-requisites needed for Engineering Technology Department majors. Because freshman and transfer students may begin their studies within the department in their first quarter at Western, it is recommended that students declare their major as early as possible. Declaration of a major does not decrease the opportunity to change plans or majors.
Students who intend to complete one of the six program majors must obtain advisement from a department advisor so that a program of study can be planned. Information about the required courses for each program can be found at each program's advising page, but consulting these pages should not replace advisement from a faculty advisor.
Students must request, in writing, any program course exception to the engineering technology department’s curriculum committee. A D+ or lower in a required program course is always considered a program exception. In the exception request form, clearly state the requested exception and a detailed explanation why the exception is being requested and why it is appropriate. Once completed, students forward the form electronically to their advisor. The student’s faculty advisor will be expected to complete the response section of the form and forward the request to the curriculum committee. Students should expect that the curriculum committee will need ample time to consider the request and the application process must be completed by the end of the fifth week of the quarter prior to the time at which a decision is required.
